Career Takes New York!
On Wednesday December 3, 2014 the new Hospitality and Tourism classes, from Career High School, took a tour of the W Hotel on Lexington Avenue in New York. The Hospitality and Tourism classes are a new offering from the business department this year and the response has been great. This year we will have over 75 students taking this semester long course that delves into the world of travel, hotels, cruises, food and beverage, hospitality and tourism. The tour of the W Hotel, a part of the Starwood Hotel Group, is located at 541 Lexington Avenue in mid-town, New York. Led by our guide, W Insider, David Nicolls, our students were able to experience first hand the front of the house, the back of the house, food and beverage operations, special events and banquets, different types of rooms and accomodations, and what it takes to work in the hotel industry, especially at the W Hotel. The students had many questions about the property, the different positions at the hotel, occupancy rates, costs, and the W brand. Mr. Nicolls was very gracious and informative in answering all that we asked of him. After the tour of the W, I was able to take take the students on a brief tour of New York including The Plaza Hotel, FAO Schwarz, St. Patrick's Catherdral, Trump Tower, Rockefeller Center, and Times Square.
